Designed by Schwartz & Gross in 1923, it contains 343 residences and occupies roughly half the block between Madison and Fifth Avenues. Longtime owner Sarah Korein also held such Manhattan properties as Lever House, 120 Broadway, and the Beresford.
The beige brick exterior is organized around avenue facing light wells and a mid-block wing on East 86th Street, while a broad entrance marquee leads to a large lobby. Apartments commonly retain pre-war proportions, including foyers, hardwood floors, ceilings of approximately 9 to 9.5 feet, generous closets, and dining alcoves or windowed dining areas. The housing ranges from studios and one bedroom layouts to larger two and three bedroom homes, and several high floor residences have city or partial Central Park views.
