Chelsea29 is a 21 story rental building at 221 West 29th Street, completed in 2017 with 95 apartments. Designed by Hill West Architects for CBSK Ironstate, it draws on the industrial architecture of Chelsea and the neighboring Garment District rather than taking the form of a conventional glass tower.
The façade combines limestone piers, dark metal and broad window bays, with five setbacks shaping the upper floors. T shaped metal finials cap the piers, a dark bandcourse runs above the second floor, and a two tiered glass marquee marks the revolving door entrance. Twenty percent of the apartments are designated as affordable housing.
The building has a 20th floor roof terrace with grilling and dining areas, along with a fitness center, resident lounge, bike room, storage and laundry room. Apartments have hardwood floors, solar shades and in-unit washers and dryers, while the building also has doorman service and a garage.
The Fashion Institute of Technology is on the surrounding blocks, placing Chelsea29 near the boundary between Chelsea and the Garment District. The 1 train stops at the 28th Street station on Seventh Avenue.
