London Terrace Gardens is a 17 story, 921 unit pre-war cooperative in Chelsea and part of the full block London Terrace complex completed in 1930. Designed by Farrar & Watmaugh for developer Henry Mandel, the connected complex rises around a long private garden between West 23rd and West 24th Streets, from Ninth to Tenth Avenue.

The development replaced the London Terrace townhouses and Chelsea Cottages, built in 1845 to designs by Alexander Jackson Davis. The land had earlier formed part of the estate of Clement Clarke Moore, author of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Buff brick façades, Romanesque details, and the enclosed courtyard temper the complex’s considerable scale. Its original recreational program included Manhattan’s largest swimming pool, a rooftop deck modeled on an ocean liner, page boys, and doormen dressed as London bobbies.

Apartments retain pre-war proportions, hardwood floors, double glazed windows, and renovated kitchens. Layouts range from alcove studios to large three bedroom homes, while exposures encompass the interior courtyard, Hudson River, and city skyline. All utilities, including heat, gas, water, and electricity, are covered by maintenance.

The landscaped garden and historic swimming pool remain the principal shared spaces; the pool complex has sauna and steam rooms, while the building also has a fitness center, roof deck, resident lounge, storage, bike room, and on-site attended parking. A 24 hour doorman and concierge staff the attended lobby. The High Line and West Chelsea’s gallery district are close by, with Chelsea Piers several blocks west.
