Description
The 23-story building proposed at 130 St. Felix Street will be the latest mixed-use addition to the Brooklyn Cultural District to combine a cultural institution with residences above in an arrangement helps the community while providing much-needed apartments that help resolve the housing crisis. The Gotham Organization’s proposal will more than double the institutional space for the Brooklyn Music School, which offers free or reduced-cost lessons to 80 percent of its 8,000-plus student body. In addition, a third of the 120 condos in the tower above will be sold at below-market rates.
The building will occupy a site that sits within a rarefied historic context, which includes classic Brooklyn rowhomes across the street, the Neo-Gothic Hanson Place Central United Methodist Church next door, and the adjacent One Hanson Place, which once stood as Brooklyn’s tallest building. FXCollaborative, one of New York’s premier architecture firms, responded with a design that pays homage to its pre-war context with light-colored brick and limestone, while offering desirable contemporary features such as floor-to-ceiling windows.
