Arverne View, 57-17 Shore Front Parkway

The Arverne View rental apartments in Far Rockaway, Queens have a unique history and a rare beachfront spot right on the Atlantic Ocean. The 13-acre, 11-building development was created in 1974 using city and federal funds to benefit working-class New Yorkers, and its homes–from studios to five-bedroom layouts–are currently under the Mitchell-Lama affordable housing program. The complex has seen complete reboot after Hurricane Sandy. Homes come in a variety of floor plans, and all utilities are included in the rent. Many units have private balconies. One of the most extraordinary perks is private beach access for Arverne View residents. On the property are over 27,000 square feet of shops, eateries and other services including a daycare center and a workforce recruitment center as well as a community room and a senior center. There are bike paths, walking paths and boardwalks, a newly-renovated basketball court, parking and an on-site supermarket. Services in the surrounding neighborhood include a new YMCA, parks and playgrounds and lots of green space. Unique to the immediate surroundings are Rockaway Beach, Jacob Riis Park and Fort Tilden on the western end of the peninsula; the beach contains the city's only surfing areas. Two arts organizations, the Rockaway Theater Company and the Rockaway Artists' Alliance, hold productions in Fort Tilden.
