An affordable lottery has just launched for 84 units of senior housing at 140 Essex Street, also known as Site 8 of Lower East Side mega-development Essex Crossing. Eight apartments have been set aside for individuals and households qualified for Section 8 housing, and they would pay 30% of income. The remaining units range from $331 to $761/month.
Individuals and two-person households where at least one member is 62 years of age or older have until August 20, 2019 to apply. A 50% preference will be given to Community Board 3 residents, with preference given to former tenants of the Seward Park Extension Urban Renewal Area. 140 Essex Street is being constructed through the Senior Affordable Rental Apartment Program and the Low Income Housing Tax Credit Program. Renderings of the design by Beyer Blinder Belle show an eight-story brick building that will ultimately have 92 units. It is expected to open in early 2020.
While a handful of senior housing projects are under construction on the Upper East Side, these can hardly hold a candle to the vibrant atmosphere of Essex Crossing. Amenities at 140 Essex Street include a fitness center, lounge, outdoor terrace, bike room, and laundry room. Residents have access to the new state-of-the-art senior center run by Grand Street Settlement at the recently opened Frances Goldin Senior Apartments, another part of Essex Crossing that opened at 175 Delancey Street last year. This also gives them easy access to the newly opened public park, Regal Cinemas, the historic Essex Market, and the much-anticipated Market Line.
