When we last checked in on Algin Management’s 62-story rental project, the 700-foot-tall high-rise was just emerging above street level. Now the curvaceous high-rise has rocketed some 35-stories into the Midtown West skyline, well past its halfway point. Now several of its lower floors are being enveloped by a sexy facade of curved glass and aluminum panels.

The building is sited midblock at 242 West 53rd Street between Eighth Avenue and Broadway and replaces the live music venue, the Roseland Ballroom. CetraRuddy is the designer of the tower and is said to have been inspired by its vibrant theater district surroundings, as well as guided by the area’s zoning constraints. According to the developer, “the building was designed as a contextual sculpture surrounded by space, creating apartments that captured the views on all sides.”

Upon completion, the building will offer 426 studio through four-bedroom apartments with high-floor units offering extraordinary views of the skyline and even Central Park. The residences are designed to maximize floor space, allow outdoor access, and enable resplendent views. There will be larger units at the top and smaller units at the bottom.

A vegetated sundeck at the second floor is being designed by Terrain Work. Per the firm’s page on the project, the need to provide for programmatic flexibility within a confined area drove the design process. The team analyzed how residents would use the outdoor spaces over time and throughout the season, and also sought to include activities that would build value to the development.

As depicted in the renderings, the multi-level deck will be programmed with a mix of private and communal pockets, lawns, an outdoor swimming pool and a rock garden that will also collect rainwater. Other amenities throughout the building will include a fitness center, indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a basketball court, and a landscaped sundeck.
