Less than two years after work began on La Central, the second and third buildings of the five-building project topped out construction. The two buildings are located at 556 and 600 Bergen Avenue and known as Buildings A and B. Representatives from the development team of The Hudson Companies, BRP Companies, ELH-TKC LLC, Breaking Ground, and Comunilife were on hand to mark the occasion.
Buildings A and B will contain 496 affordable housing units, a state-of-the-art 50,000-square-foot YMCA, a television studio for BronxNet, a 9,000-square-foot rooftop garden operated by Grow NYC, and ground-floor retail along Westchester Avenue.

Like all buildings in the complex, Buildings A and B are designed by FXCollaborative in partnership with MHG Architect. They will also integrate the same sustainable features as other buildings in the complex, such as a tight building envelope, solar panels, and green roofs that include the aforementioned garden. There will be low-flow fixtures and water-efficient appliances in every apartment. Completion of this phase is expected to wrap up in July 2020.
“La Central is a transformative project, developed to serve as a resource and destination for the community” – Meredith Marshall, BRP Companies
The topping out comes as the first phase of La Central, a nine-story supportive/affordable building, prepares to open next month. Co-developers Breaking Ground and Comunilife set aside a percentage of units for formerly homeless individuals with special needs, and the city held an affordable lottery for the remaining units.
Buildings A and B are a key part of the 1.1 million-square-foot master plan for La Central. The five-building development will ultimately include 992 units of affordable housing, 80,000 square feet of community space, 25,000 square feet of retail space, a skate park, and public green space developed by Future Green Studio. Completion is estimated for 2023.
