August 2025 kicked off with what North Shore Animal League calls DOGust 1, the official birthday of rescue dogs. Their Port Washington adoption center is marking the occasion with 50% off adoption fees for all animals aged four months and older through August 10. In the city, adoption organizations like ACC, Best Friends, Bideawee, and Korean K9 Rescue are hosting mobile adoption events throughout the month.
When adopting a dog, one of the biggest questions is where to walk it. Studies show that buildings near the most popular parks in all boroughs are most popular among dog owners. However, some building located both near parks and further afield have gone one step further by making dog runs part of their amenity packages. Some buildings cover their dog runs for inclement weather; in all buildings, this amenity adds another level of convenience. Additionally, while the dogs might get skittish in a public park's dog run packed with canine and human strangers, a building's private dog run would allow them to familiarize themselves with neighboring dogs and even make friends.

Before construction began on a long-awaited new Port Authority Bus Terminal, Hell's Kitchen residents were disappointed to learn that local dog park Astro's Dog Run would have to close during construction with no word on when or if it would reopen. However, Manhattan View at MiMa takes some of the sting out of that for residents. Their amenity package includes New York City's first in-building dog spa, which has access to an outdoor dog run.
