According to an application recently filed with the city, a 14-story mixed-use building designed by Panagiotis Vikatos will rise at 128 West 26th Street. The ground floor will be over 2,000 square feet of retail, and the residential floors above will have one large unit each. Gary Vinbaytel of 126 West 26th Street LLC is developing it.
The site was formerly home to a commercial building. However, construction a few doors down caused such significant structural damage that the Chelsea building had to be vacated and popular local restaurant Tre Dici was forced to close. The city issued a stop-work order for the site in question and approved a demolition of 128, proving that sometimes the only way to solve a problem is to start completely afresh.
