As we eagerly await visuals of Zaha Hadid’s second residential project in West Chelsea, Spanish firm Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura has published renderings of his unchosen competition design prepared for The Moinian Group. The project site, at 220 11th Avenue, spans a full blockfront between West 25th and 26th streets and is a half block from the High Line and near Hudson Yards. While details of Zaha’s chosen design remain scarce, permits say the building will hold several floors of museum/gallery space with apartments above.
Though Bofill’s take on the project will be unquestionably different from the late architect’s, it does give us clues on the scale of the building to come. Bofill's design is inspired by the traditional Italian Palazzo and seeks to serve as an urban magnet that resonates with West Chelsea’s industrial past. The podium would be wrapped in translucent glass, which Bofill says is to extend the gallery/museum area into the public realm. An alternative program called for an 80-key boutique hotel in lieu of the museum/gallery.

The residential floors would be clad in a mix of wood paneling and wooden slats. Meaty vertical and horizontal elements would be arrayed in an alternating and interlocking pattern, resembling timber construction.
In a 2016 press release, Mitchell Moinian, vice president of the Moinian Group, says construction of 220 11th Ave is to begin this year with sales launching in the second half of the year. A teaser site has also launched for prospective buyers. The project is one of the Zaha Hadid’s final creations and supposedly the architect has “translated Manhattan’s powerful geometries and rhythms…integrating the city’s unyielding spirit and distinctive vernacular with the finely detailed craftsmanship of her acclaimed jewelry collaborations.”
