Just over two years since the Waldorf Astoria hotel closed to the public, a door is cracking open for The Towers of the Waldorf Astoria, as the famed property's private residences have been dubbed. A teaser site has launched, and developer Anbang Insurance Group has tapped Douglas Elliman Development Marketing to manage sales of 375 studio through five-bedroom apartments, which will offer a wide variety of layouts and sizes. Residents will have access to more than a full city block of amenities.

An offering plan has not yet been filed, but unnamed sources told The Wall Street Journal that the prices would likely be on a par with the city’s highest-prices condos, which would be around $3,500 per square foot.

“Waldorf Astoria is a historic symbol of timeless grace and boasts a pedigree unlike any residential real estate offering” – Susan de Franca, chief executive, Douglas Elliman Development Marketing

While the New York super-luxury market is growing increasingly crowded, very few developments can match the celebrated history of the Waldorf Astoria. Seemingly from the time it opened its doors, the hotel attracted royalty, world leaders, business executives, and celebrities of all types. The 88-year-old hotel was designated a New York City landmark in 1993, and its Art Deco interiors were likewise designated in March 2017 with, as 6sqft reports, no hesitation from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Project architect Skidmore Owings & Merrill has been working within the landmark restrictions.
In addition to the private residences, the revamped property will include 350 new hotel rooms and renovated event and public spaces designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon. Residents and guests alike will have access to Personal Concierge and True Waldorf Service. Completion of all components is estimated for 2021.
