New York City remains the number one financial center in the world according to an index produced by London's Z/Yen Group in partnership with the China Development Institute. The March 2022 edition of the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI) shows that Big Apple has extended its lead over its nearest rival London. New York consolidated its leading position in a range of relevant industry sectors, leading in all of the index's five assessment areas: Business Environment, Human Capital, Financial Sector Development, Reputation/General.
Perhaps partly serving as an explanation as to why our housing costs have remained stubbornly high throughout the pandemic, the city ranked as the number one place for the survey's 12,000 respondents to relocate to if they needed to live and work in a different city. Despite our exorbitant housing costs, concerns about safety and quality of life, and an increasingly embarrassing mass transit system, New York received more than double the number of votes as its next rival London.
