1010 Fifth Avenue is a prestigious prewar cooperative built in 1928 by famed developer Frederick Fillmore French. Designed in the Italian Renaissance style, this 15-story building sits on the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and East 82nd Street, directly across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was converted to a cooperative in 1979 and consists of 70 apartments.
The building boasts a rusticated four-story limestone base, a canopied entrance on 82nd Street, decorative bandcourses, a balustraded bandcourse above the 12th floor, and a stringcourse above the 14th floor. The beige-brick façade features corner quoins, a cornice, and window surrounds on the fifth and 13th floors, with sidewalk landscaping adding to its charm.
1010 Fifth Avenue offers a suite of white-glove amenities, including a 24-hour doorman, concierge, elevator attendant, resident manager, and fitness center. Residents also enjoy a newly restored lobby, laundry room, and basement storage. The building is pet-friendly.
The penthouse at 1010 Fifth Avenue gained fame for its extensive landscaping, which required an additional 40 tons of structural steel to support its 135 tons of soil and greenery. Originally protected by a 12-foot-high steel-and-glass windscreen, later reduced in height, the garden was the subject of disputes over structural concerns. After a legal battle, research confirmed the garden’s originality, and a court mandated its restoration at the co-op board’s expense.
