As of this writing, it is officially less than one month until Thanksgiving (which falls on Thursday, November 24 this year). As such, many people's minds have turned to where and how to enjoy the big meal with family and friends. For those staying in the city, a number of new developments have embraced open floor plans that include open kitchens. This layout makes a space feel bigger, lets in a greater amount of natural light, and allows for a seamless connection between guests and hosts.

Meanwhile, the Thanksgiving holiday has a way of throwing the advantages of separate kitchens into sharp relief. Strong cooking aromas have a way of lingering in an open space, and a separate kitchen can do a number on containing them. At a time when one person is likely to be using noisy kitchen appliances while another watches the football game, this layout allows all activities to take place with minimal disruption. When it's time to sit down to dinner, it's a lot easier to feel thankful without a messy kitchen and mountain of dishes staring one in the face.

In New York, separate kitchens are likelier to be found in prewar apartments with more traditional layouts. At the same time, some designers have predicted that closed-off kitchens could make a comeback, and certain new developments have separated the kitchens or incorporated pocket doors that can be used at the owner's convenience.
