While virtual doorman technology has come a long way in recent years, allowing owners to control access to their buildings and apartments via phone or smartwatch from anywhere in the world, some feel that there is no substitute for a physically attended building. Doormen always have access to owners' keys and can admit them, their children, and carefully vetted guests who might not have an apartment key. They are authorized to accept packages, which is especially important at a time when over 75% of U.S. adults shop online. Pied-a-terre owners can also enjoy the security of knowing someone is literally watching the building while they're away.

Additionally, doormen can offer prospective buyers invaluable insights on life in the building. While discretion is key among door staff and they may not be able to spill personal details about their favorite or least favorite residents, they can give the basic outline of the building's demographics (i.e., lots of families with small children). Moreover, even the shortest greeting at the entrance can set the tone for the atmosphere inside.
