Garden apartments perfect for sharing with a furry friend Garden apartments perfect for sharing with a furry friend
April 11 is observed as National Pet Day all over the country, and comes at a time when New York City and State have been burnishing their pet-friendly credentials. In October 2024, a bill introduced by City Councilmember Shaun Abreu would amend the city’s Earned Safe and Sick Time Act to allow people to use their paid sick time to take care of pets. More recently, a new state bill seeks to establish a grant program to help homeless people and domestic abuse survivors be sheltered with their pets during a housing crisis.
Both bills are in committee and recognize both the love people have for their pets and the benefits of pet ownership. At a time when America is described as being in a loneliness epidemic, pets are excellent social icebreakers in public and provide excellent companionship at home. Indeed, a 2024 study by the Mayo Clinic outlined several physical and mental health benefits of pet ownership, including improved heart health and stress management.

Landlords and developers all over the city also recognize the power of the pet owner, as seen in numerous buildings with pet-friendly amenities and lenient pet policies. A study from the American Kennel Club found that New York City neighborhoods near parks are most popular among dog owners, but these garden units all over the city offer space for playtime right outside the door. And if you don't have a furry friend now, we look at pets available for adoption.
