129 East 73rd Street, the past week's top contract (Modlin Group LLC) 129 East 73rd Street, the past week's top contract (Modlin Group LLC)
From July 17-23, 2023, the top contract recorded by Olshan Realty's market report was a townhouse at 129 East 73rd Street asking $27,500,000. The Neo-Italian Renaissance-style house dates back to 1907 and underwent an extensive renovation in 2005, but its appearance in the 2006 film adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada that brought it to prominence. As Curbed observed when the townhouse listed in May 2023, the foyer and stairwell look largely the same as they did in the movie. Features not seen onscreen include a formal dining room with terrace access, a full-floor primary suite, and a custom-built basketball court on the top floor.
The Upper East Side townhouse had the top contract by a comfortable margin: It was trailed by 326 West 80th Street, a beautifully restored Upper West Side townhouse asking $13,995,000. Original architectural details have been restored, and state-of-the-art enhancements include a Savant home automation system, a Séura television mirror in the living room, a media room with a video wall, a climate-controlled wine room in the basement, and a landscaped roof terrace with built-in speakers and fire pit.

Also last week, the townhouse at 415 East 50th Street found a buyer with an asking price of $6,750,000. The house dates back to the turn of the 20th century; since then, it has undergone a full infrastructure update, including heated wiring on the roof to prevent ice and snow damage; however, none of this comes at the expense of its original design. The listing notes that stage and screen actress Julie Harris once lived there; the most recent buyer has not been identified, and public records list the seller as George Blake Cabot.
