New York is home to some of the most expensive homes in the country (where else would a $20 million apartment be considered a steal?), but that is not to say that homeownership is completely unobtainable. A key component of Mayor Adams' housing plan is expanding affordable homeownership opportunities. At a state level, Governor Hochul recently signed legislation easing the way for empty hotels to be converted to residential use, thus adding more housing units and reducing scarcity.
As we wait to see how these initiatives will address the housing crisis, there are a number of programs in place to help with homeownership. The HomeFirst Down Payment Assistance Program offers up to $100,000 toward a down payment or closing costs to first-time homebuyers who meet income eligibility requirements and program requirements, which include completing a homebuyer education course. Additionally, the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA) offers a number of low-cost mortgages, homeownership counseling, and other resources to expand access to homeownership.
