Ever since the Jehovah’s Witnesses sold off their Brooklyn properties to finance new upstate headquarters, parts of DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights have welcomed new tenants and new designs. The latest example is at 80 Adams Street. Jeffrey Gershon of Hope Street Capital bought the single-story garage for $60 million in November 2017 and wasted no time commissioning ODA Architecture to design a new building for the site. Renderings show a playful, broken-up façade with plenty of outdoor space. The city signed off on the demolition of the old building last fall, and the new is planned for 2019. A recent visit revealed that this goal is within reach: Construction is already several stories up, and a distinctive shape is coming into view.

The new building will contain a ground-level community center and 165 apartments, most likely rentals. Residential amenities are expected to include a fitness center, pool, bike room, lounge, library, recreation rooms, a roof deck, and a 66-space parking garage. Prices are not yet available, but CityRealty data reports that DUMBO median rents range from $3,190/month for studios to a whopping $7,196/month for three-bedrooms.

80 Adams Street is not the only former Jehovah’s Witness property to see action in recent weeks. Directly across the street, Rabsky Group has begun demolition at 69 Adams Street. Up the road at 85 Jay Street, a development team led by Kushner purchased the three-acre property for $345 million in 2016. An expansive, 732-unit building with an enormous enclosed courtyard is currently under construction.
