Cary Tamarkin mustered the approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) last spring to convert the former St. Agnes School for Girls at 555 West End Avenue into a condominium with 13 high-end units. While a full set of permits must still be approved, demolition and abatement have already begun inside. In addition to carving out a sumptuous collection of high-ceilinged residences, a single-story penthouse addition will be constructed atop, raising the building's height by more than 20 feet.
The building is situated on Upper West Side at the corner of West End Avenue and West 87th Street. Designed by William A. Boring and completed in 1908, its exterior features ornate red brick and terra cotta. Many of its original details, like parapets and wooden windows, will be restored to their historic condition. In October 2014, the building and its air rights were purchased by the high-end developer and architect for $50 million.

CM & Associates (CMA) is serving as the project's construction manager and has published several new renderings on their website. A pair of interior images show that kitchens and bathrooms will be finished in hearty woods and marble, providing the spaces with a warm and cozy ambiance. Yet-to-be-approved permit applications indicate the cellar will contain a fitness center, tenant storage, and a recreation space. Triplex apartments will span from the cellar to the second floor and another duplex unit will span the second floor and its mezzanine level. The duplex penthouse apartment will include an expansive, two-level private terrace.
