838 Fifth Avenue is a 12 story, 18 residence condominium at Fifth Avenue and East 65th Street, created in 1999 from a 1951 office building. Harry M. Prince designed the original limestone clad headquarters for the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, known as the House of Living Judaism, whose façade carried the inscription Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself.

Beyer Blinder Belle handled the residential conversion for developers Louis Dubin and Metin Negrin of the Athena Group. The project incorporated adjoining 2 East 65th Street, replacing an 1881 townhouse with an eight story wing and adding a floor to the original structure. Broad windows and a gently curved roofline define the Fifth Avenue façade, while the mid-block wing has Juliet balconies. Developer and former Sotheby’s chairman A. Alfred Taubman, who lived next door at 834 Fifth Avenue, was among the property’s owners.

Full floor homes span roughly 4,500 to more than 5,700 square feet and commonly open from private landings into central reception galleries. These galleries divide western entertaining rooms from eastern bedroom and service wings, while oversized windows provide approximately 44 to 45 feet of Central Park frontage in several residences. Lobby level studio annexes and private storage accompany several of the larger homes.

The building has an attended lobby, concierge, 24 hour doorman, central air conditioning, fitness center, laundry room and resident storage. It faces the Central Park Zoo entrance across Fifth Avenue and Temple Emanu-El across East 65th Street, with Madison Avenue shops and restaurants one block east. Past residents have included Seagram heir Charles Bronfman and Allen Simon.
