between Watts & Canal Street View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 459 Washington Street by Carter Horsley

This handsome and imposing 7-story, mid-block building at 459 Washington Street was erected in 1920.  It has 12 condominium apartments and is just north of the TriBeCa North Historic District and just south of Canal Street.

It is also very close to West Street and the spectacular crystalline Spring Street Salt Shed one block north of Canal Street.

It is known as the John Watt Condominium and is on a cobblestone street.

It is across from a handsome, red-brick, mid-rise apartment building with a large, hanging marquee entrance.

Bottom Line

A wide, pre-war, mid-block loft building that is one of the handsomest in North TriBeCa.

Description

The building has two large ground-floor retail spaces, each with four-step-up stair entrances.

The first floor has a dark façade in contrast to the rest of the building that is neatly divided into two-window bays with grooved piers.

There is a very decorative bandcourse above the third floor and the building also has five grooved piers at the top floor, which has arched windows, and beside the fourth and fifth floors.

The building has a strong and pronounced cornice.

Amenities

The building has a roof deck, a part-time superintendent, central air-conditioning, a key-locked elevator, a video intercom and fireplace flues.

Apartments

Apartments have large and wide living/dining rooms and open kitchens and their own roof space.
