136 East 79th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

Georgian-style architecture is one of the most elegant but it has not been adapted very often to high-rise apartment buildings.

This very fine building is a rather hybrid "interpretation" of that style and a very interesting exception that is most appealing and very distinguished.

The red-brick building has simple limestone window surrounds that conjure royal ermine collars, at least for those with romantic imaginations.

The window surrounds, of course, by themselves are fairly minimal though bold and what makes this building special are its large, very tall, arched windows on the first floor and the delicate wrought-iron window grills and the wrought-iron second floor

balcony above the entrance.

The building has some unusual layouts and these are reflected in the facade's irregular window pattern near the top of the building.

The 15-story apartment house was erected in 1928 and converted to a cooperative in 1946. It has only 30 apartments.

The building has sidewalk landscaping, a doorman, discrete air-conditioners and very attractive, wrought-iron entrance doors beneath a broken pediment surround and a large circular window.

It is convenient to many restaurants, boutiques and good neighborhood shopping. It is close to several schools and not far from numerous museums and religious institutions. There is good cross-town bus service on 79th Street and a subway station is nearby at Lexington Avenue and 77th Street.
