The Strathmore - 400 East 84th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW


This very nicely proportioned and well-designed tower is a fine example of the "new" luxury standards for New York apartments that began to emerge in the late 1990’s.

Apartments, for example, are pre-wired for cable TV, phones, faxes and computers in every room and each apartment has its own washer/dryer unit, wall-to-wall carpeting in all bedrooms, and floor-to-ceiling windows with 9-ft ceilings. In addition, the kitchens come with quarry tiled floors, granite countertops, and porcelain sinks and the bathrooms are marble tiled with oversized tubs, polished brass fittings and tri-view medicine cabinets.

The handsome, 43-story rental building has many corner bay windows, a health club and pool, a doorman, a concierge, a garage, a sundeck, a children’s room, a private garden, a bicyle room, a recreation room, video security and valet service and it also permits dogs. There are some duplex penthouses.

It was designed by Costas Kondylis for The Related Companies and is not too far from Carl Schurz Park to the east and several private schools. It is not close to subways but there is excellent crosstown bus service on 86th Street.
