Review of 182 East 95th Street by Carter Horsley

This large rental apartment building at 182 East 95th Street, which is known as Highgate,  was erected by Milstein Properties in 1982.

This 29-story building contains 253 apartments. It was designed by Jarmul & Brizee. It is also known as 1680-1692 Third Avenue.

It occupies most of the block on the west side of Third Avenue between 95th and 94th streets.

It is south of a large public school across 95th Street that is east of a large park at the Lexington Avenue corner at 96th Street where there is a subway station.

Bottom Line

The Highgate is one block east of one of Carnegie Hill’s most attractive brownstone street and is very close to an express subway station on Lexington Avenue at 96th Street.  Architecturally, this area is very interesting with a handsome mosque designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill one block to the north across Third Avenue from a large, curved apartment tower.

Description

The Highgate is distinguished by a large, white-stone, “torii,” a free-standing entrance gateway over its large entrance marquee.

It also has a large, landscaped plaza on 95th Street.

The red-brick tower, which has discrete air-conditioners, rises without setbacks.

Amenities

It has 24-hour concierge service and attended garage, a roof deck, a laundry facility and a security desk.

Apartments

There are 10 small apartments a floor.

The E line has an entry foyer that leads past an enclosed kitchen to an 18-foot-long living room.  The unit has an 11-foot-long bedroom.

The K line faces Third Avenue and has an enclosed kitchen, a 17-foot-long living room and an 11-foot-long bedroom.

History

The Highgate is also across Third Avenue and 95th Street from the three towers of Normandie Court, a major residential development occupying a full block between 95th and 96th streets to Second Avenue that is also a Milstein development.

The Milstein family was involved in the commercial flooring business until the 1960's when Paul and Seymour Milstein entered the city's real estate business with the construction of the Dorchester apartment building a few blocks north of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. They would soon thereafter erect two major apartment buildings on the east side of Broadway across from the center and subsequently would become one of the most active residential buildings at Battery Park City.

Other projects include the Biltmore Plaza residential complex in Kips Bay, the conversion of the former Biltmore Hotel on Madison Avenue into an office building and the Milford Plaza Hotel on Eighth Avenue near Times Square.
