Overview of 241 Central Park West

241 Central Park West is a 19 story, 139 apartment rental at the north corner of West 84th Street, designed in the Art Deco style by Schwartz & Gross and completed in 1930. The buff brick façade is organized by projecting vertical piers, dark spandrels and upper setbacks, with floral or cornstalk motifs rising from the base into finials at the roofline. Its composition is closely related to 55 Central Park West, another Schwartz & Gross design.

Developed by Victor Earle and John C. Calhoun through Earle & Calhoun, the building replaced eight rowhouses and was acquired by the Rudin family in 1945. Earle and his brother Guyon developed the dropped living room arrangement that shaped many of its interiors. Actor Richard Dreyfuss has been among the residents.

Sunken living rooms are common, and a number of apartments have wood burning fireplaces and high ceilings. Large foyers and separate living and dining rooms recur, often with hardwood floors and windowed kitchens; many renovated homes also have in-unit laundry. Eastern exposures face Central Park, while corner layouts may combine northern, southern and western views.

The building has a full time doorman, a live-in superintendent, central laundry and a pet friendly policy. Central Park is directly across the avenue, the American Museum of Natural History is three blocks south, and the 86th Street station for the B and C trains is two blocks north on Central Park West.
