Harperley Hall stands as one of Central Park West's most architecturally distinctive buildings, a 12 story Arts and Crafts masterpiece completed in 1911 by architect Henry W. Wilkinson. Named after his ancestral manor house in Northumberland, England, the building was originally conceived as a co-op suitable for artists' studios and featured the renowned Tonalist painter Dwight Tryon among its early investor group. The brown brick façade with limestone base showcases rare glazed tiles in gold, turquoise, and green that burst from the undulating brickwork, creating a distinctive carpet like texture that sets it apart from typical Manhattan apartment buildings.

The building's most striking feature is its T-shaped courtyard entrance on West 64th Street, protected by an elegant wrought iron fence and staffed by a 24 hour manned gatehouse that provides an unusually private and secure residential experience. Unlike most buildings with utilitarian light courts, Harperley Hall's courtyard is beautifully finished with fountains and landscaping, creating a protected oasis. The 85 apartments feature generous proportions, many with 10+ foot ceilings, wood burning fireplaces, and oversized windows, and some offering direct Central Park views. Several units boast private balconies, including a continuous balcony that curves around the building's Central Park West corner.

Madonna famously resided here for several years, using her apartment for dance training and exercise routines, though this led to a notable 2011 legal dispute with an upstairs neighbor over noise complaints. The building also has counted Stephen Burke, CEO of NBC Universal, among its residents. After the original co-op failed in 1941, the building operated as a rental until being reconverted to a cooperative in 1983.
