HAP Five is an 8 story rental building at 329 Pleasant Avenue in East Harlem, completed in 2017 with 20 apartments. Developed by Hap Investments LLC and designed by Karim Rashid with Karl Fisher and WASA, it is organized around a highly graphic façade of angled balconies, perforated screens, colored glass railings, and hot pink balcony edges. The building is set back from the avenue in a plaza beneath a long marquee with crisscrossed supports.
The apartments comprise studios, one bedroom homes, and a single two bedroom residence. Private balconies or terraces are a recurring feature, along with floor to ceiling windows, open city or garden views, and in unit washers and dryers. Open layouts concentrate kitchens and closets into compact zones, leaving the main living areas more continuous and allowing light to reach farther into the apartments.
At the building level, HAP Five has a roof garden and rooftop terrace with Manhattan views, an outdoor entertainment space, resident storage, a garden, laundry facilities, and a virtual doorman. Pets are allowed. The design's angled balcony screens are not merely applied ornament: their shifting geometry creates a patterned, permeable façade that changes the way light enters the apartments.
The building is on a tree lined avenue one block from the East River promenade and around the corner from East River Plaza, with Costco, Target, Marshalls, Planet Fitness, restaurants, and other retailers. Community gardens and parks are also part of the immediate East Harlem setting.
