Flatbush Gardens is a 59 building rental complex in Flatbush, with roughly 2,500 apartments in six story red brick buildings completed in 1950. Formerly known as Vanderveer Estates, the complex occupies the former site of the Flatbush Water Works and extends from Foster Avenue to Newkirk Avenue between Brooklyn and Nostrand avenues.
The buildings are arranged around landscaped courtyards, with rusticated quoins, simple cornice treatments and fire escapes set into corner lightwells. Apartments commonly have hardwood floors, and many renovated interiors retain enclosed, windowed kitchens; entry foyers also recur in larger layouts.
Shared facilities include children’s playgrounds, sports and handball courts, a daycare center and laundry rooms. Garages and other on-site parking serve the complex, while live-in superintendents, maintenance staff and porters handle building operations.
