Description

Contact the listing agent for more information and to schedule an appointment. Even from the outside, you get the feeling that this enchanting home is really something special. Designed by Charles H. Beer and built in 1888, 102 West 123rd Street features original stained glass transoms and molded stone details -- topped with a large denticulated cornice, and grounded by a solid tall stoop.

This is a 20' wide semi-detached 'bookend' brownstone. It is an excellent example of a Neo-Grec home and one of the finest and most unique properties within the Mount Morris Park Historic District. On the parlor floor, the main entryway is framed by two fluted pilasters, and inside, a large original pier mirror and bench sits underneath a reclaimed 1920's original chandelier, all outside of the imported 1880's Argentinian wooden arched doorway. Entering further, original paneling and a solid mahogany banister invites the visitor upstairs to a spectacular one-of-a-kind loft loaded with original detailing, two wood burning fireplaces, and unique materials such as reclaimed soapstone, a cast-iron support column, and wide plank cork flooring.

The ceiling height measures 11 feet. This floor serves as the main dining and entertainment space with an open and professional chef's kitchen that was spared no expense. There is also a beautiful view of the gorgeous landmark church across the street with a large stained-glass rose-window which adds a special ambience to the room. Preparing delicious meals here is a dream, with a 48' Pro Sub-Zero refrigerator and a LaCornue Chateau 150 range with a commercial hood, as well as Gaggenau Induction range.

There are two wash & prep stations accented with deep original porcelain sinks, Miele Dishwasher, and a 10' long countertop made of one solid piece of custom volcanic soapstone which is known to withstand the hottest temperatures. Toward the back of this floor, a windowed guest bathroom features honeycomb Carrara marble floor tiling that is honed and soft to the touch. The vintage square copper butler's sink and antique mirror make for delightful conversation pieces, and the stylistic fixtures by Harrington Brass create a luxurious bath and shower experience.

The back room is currently set up as a dining room but can easily convert to a permanent bedroom if needed. It features a beautiful wood burning fireplace and the space can either be left open or closed with an exposed original pocket door. Upstairs on the top level of this home, a beautiful king-master bedroom is stylistically adorned with a functioning copper bathtub that is placed next to an original wood burning fireplace. The master bathroom features another antique vanity next to a modern steam shower.

There is a walk-in dressing area and a full size laundry room with floor-to-ceiling original cabinetry accented with brass hinges and latches. In the front, an extra-large bedroom, which features another fireplace and two oversized windows facing the historic church next door. There is another smaller corner bedroom and a bathroom in the center hall which benefits from a big skylight and notable fixtures by Lefroy Brooks and Fantini. The backyard of this home is absolutely enchanting and deserves a special mention.

Since the property is detached, there is a lot of open space in the yard, yet it remains extremely private, secluded, and shaded with the large overhanging tree cover. It is a generous private outdoor space - approximately 20' x 40'. The perimeter of the yard is fenced-in using reclaimed original wood from the brownstone itself.

It is a delightful space to entertain, take in the fall colors, have snowball fight, whatever you can imagine. This location is extremely convenient to life in Harlem and the city at large. Bordering this haven in the city are Mount Morris Park, Central Park and Morningside Park. Lenox Avenue has excellent dining including Marcus Samuelson's Red Rooster, and the long-standing Sylvia's Restaurant.

Additional bar and restaurant options all within a three-block radius include Cove, Corner Social, Harlem Shake, Lenox Sapphire, and Indian Summer. Just a few more blocks south into the historic district and you will find favorites including Settepani, Sottocasa (best pizza ever!), and Barrawine. Head a little further west and find Clay - one of the nicest dining experiences in the city.

Grocery shopping is made easy with a new Whole Foods just two blocks away, and public transportation by the 2 and 3 express train station which whisk you downtown to Times Square in only 15 minutes. Airports are always an easy distance away (with LaGuardia less than 20 minutes by taxi) making this an ideal place for a frequent traveler. This is an extremely unique opportunity to own one of the most impressive buildings uptown, and there are so many details you must see in-person. Choose your own adventure, there is space to stretch out, live in community, work from home, guest room or guest apartments abound, space for a live-in nanny, you really can have it all.
