Last week, Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura announced the opening of registration for free Learn to Swim classes across New York City that will teach young people aged 18 months to 17 years old how to swim and build water safety skills. The classes will take place at 18 public pools, nearly double last year's total of ten, across New York City, starting on July 6, shortly after NYC Parks outdoor public pools open for the season on Saturday, June 27.

"New York City is a beach town, with 14 miles of beaches and dozens of public pools for New Yorkers who want to cool off on a hot summer day" — Mayor Mamdani

This year marks the first anniversary of the Gottesman Pool at the new Davis Center in Central Park North. The pool was designed to blend in with Central Park's greenery, and one local described it to Gothamist as "a hundred times better" than the outdated Lasker Rink & Pool it replaced. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but its massive 285' by 120' size is larger than an Olympic pool and big enough to accommodate 50-meter lap swimming, not to mention over 1,000 swimmers. Additional amenities include locker rooms, public restrooms, and concessions.
Floating Pool Lady, NYC floating pool The Floating Pool Lady (NYC Parks Department)
New York City has come a long way from the floating bathhouses placed alongside underserved communities in the early 20th century. However, nonprofit The Neptune Foundation pays tribute to them with the Floating Pool Lady, a cargo barge turned recreation complex that includes a half-Olympic sized pool. it will be moored at Barretto Point Park in the Hunt's Point section of the Bronx, where it can host up to 1,200 swimmers daily.
But for some New Yorkers, the pool is already open. These residential buildings have indoor pools on high floors that allow for incredible views to enjoy while doing laps. They are often accompanied by state-of-the-art fitness centers so as to offer fitness enthusiasts a choice of exercising in the water or on land. And whether in the long days of summer or dark days of winter, their high elevations allow for excellent natural light.
