The Uptown Memphis building, initially unrelated to the Memphis Downtown, shares a whimsical design style popular in the 1980s. Evans View is a slender 40 story, 157 unit condominium at 303 East 60th Street, completed in 1987 and originally marketed as Uptown Memphis. Designed by Gruzen Samton Steinglass and Abraham Rothenberg for developer Aaron Green, the tower draws on the 1980s Memphis movement through its pitched red roof, angled balconies, decorative metal railings, and blue air conditioning vents. Elliot Willensky and Norval White called it "the ultimate sliver: lanky, proud, colorful, and witty" in The AIA Guide to New York City.
The narrow floor plate gives many residences corner exposures, with oversized windows and private balconies recurring in the layouts. Larger homes often use split bedroom plans with north and west exposures, open or pass through kitchens, and living areas adjoining balconies. Upper floors have broad city, East River, and Queensboro Bridge views, while basement storage bins accompany many units.
The building has a 24 hour doorman and concierge. A planted courtyard marks the entrance, while the fitness center, shared outdoor terrace, windowed laundry room, and resident storage make up the principal common amenities. Pets are permitted.
Evans View overlooks the Roosevelt Island Tram terminal at Second Avenue, beside the Manhattan approach to the Queensboro Bridge. Bloomingdale's is at Lexington Avenue and East 59th Street, Whole Foods is on East 57th Street between Second and Third avenues, and Central Park begins farther west at Fifth Avenue.
