Designed by the renowned Michael Graves, The Impala at 404 East 76th Street is a striking example of postmodern architecture, bringing bold design and thoughtful living spaces to the Upper East Side. Completed in 2000 by RFR Holdings, the 31-story, 194-unit condominium was Graves' first residential project in New York City, notable for its multi-paned windows, intricate façade detailing, and a unique blend of geometric patterns and warm materials.
The building’s name is a nod to the bronze impala sculptures by South African artist Danie de Jager, which are displayed throughout the 15,000-square-foot landscaped courtyard, offering a rare touch of public art in a private residence.
The building offers a full-time doorman and concierge, a fitness center with a sauna and steam room, a business center with conference facilities, and a children’s playroom. Residents also have access to a bike room, storage spaces, an on-site parking garage with valet service, and multiple outdoor spaces for relaxation.
Select apartments feature private terraces and 12-foot ceilings, while the upper floors provide sweeping views of the East River and Midtown skyline. Graves also designed the lobby’s maple-paneled walls and limestone flooring, creating a refined yet welcoming atmosphere.
Located between First Avenue and the East River, The Impala is surrounded by local parks, high-end fitness studios, specialty markets, and some of the best dining options in the neighborhood. While the building is not directly adjacent to a subway station, the Second Avenue Q train, the 6 train, FDR Drive, and crosstown buses at 72nd and 79th Streets offer multiple transportation options.
