New Chelsea condo
By Carter Horsley   |   From Archives Monday, July 25, 2005
Scaffolding is up around the 9-story, neo-Renaissance-style, mid-block building at 15 West 20th Street, which is being converted to condominium apartments.

The building, which has a two-step-up entrance and a two-story rusticated limestone base, was erected in 1906 and designed by Lafayette A. Goldstone.

In April, the City Planning Commission approved an application by Strategic Chelsea LLC, which is converting the building, to modify the rear yard setback requirements for the site in connection with a two-story enlargement of the building, which is located within the Ladies' Mile Historic District. The proposal was approved by the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission and Community Board 5 and the Borough President's office.

The building, which is located between Fifth Avenue and the Avenue of the Americas, will have 17 condominium units. Avinash K. Malhottra is the architect for the conversion.
