Everything seems to come with a trade-off, and that is true in Williamsburg: As a crop of eye-catching residences rises, this new construction comes at the expense of the historic warehouses and industrial buildings that were once its signature. Demolition permits for the elaborate warehouse at 286 Wythe Avenue were filed last October, and its days are now numbered.
Once the site is clear, a six-story building will rise. Plans filed with the city call for over 12,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and 55 rental units on top. Renderings show oversized windows and grey stone accents throughout, and private terraces for select units. Interior renderings by Brooklyn-based Durukan Design show a fitness center and lounge, and amenities will also include on-site parking, a bike room, and a roof deck. Completion is estimated for 2020.

The site is described as being on “North Williamsburg’s restaurant row,” and is indeed near Devocion, Aurora, Skinny Dennis, and Radegast Hall and Biergarten. Residents will have their choice of the North Williamsburg ferry and the Bedford Avenue L subway stop. And as the building will be directly across the street from the BARC Shelter, one would hope it will be pet-friendly!
