Features
Roughly two and a half years after the groundbreaking, construction is nearly complete on a new senior housing complex at 34-11 Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway. The curved, seven-story building is the first to rise under the city’s Senior Affordable Rental Apartments (SARA) program, and the design by Aufgang Architects took the environment into account along with aesthetics: Features include an energy-efficient insulation system, LED lighting in common areas, low-flow fixtures, and solar panels. It is also equipped with flood prevention technology.
Of the 154 units for low-income seniors, 46 will be reserved for formerly homeless. According to plans filed with the city, all units of housing will be on the floors above a 4,500-square-foot community facility and about 11,000 square feet of retail space. Services such as counseling, healthcare, and social services will be provided by Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development Corporation. Amenities will include indoor and outdoor recreation areas, a computer room with internet access, and a club room.
