The iconic Starrett Lehigh Building at 601 West 26th Street offers its office tenants an extensive choice of food trucks at its curb and many truck bays, but it has plans to go one step further by opening a food hall with room for as many as 15 vendors. The first step is gaining permission from the Landmarks Preservation Commission to install signage and ground floor infill and cladding.
The Starrett Lehigh Building was originally designed in the 1930s as a transportation and distribution center in a joint venture between Starrett Investment Company and Lehigh Valley Railroad. Its International-style design by Cory & Cory Architects, with Yasuo Matsui and Purdy & Henderson, incorporates Art Deco details and is known for its miles of urban windows. It was designated a New York City landmark in 1986.
In the Starrett Lehigh Building's current incarnation as commercial space, tenants such as Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Canada Goose, Ralph Lauren, Club Monaco, Thinx, Sequential Brands Group, Verizon, and Security Industry Specialists appreciate its open floor plans, double-height ceilings, river and High Line views, and abundant natural light. The aforementioned food trucks are among the many perks, including a bike room, fitness center, shuttle service to major transportation hubs, and a variety of cultural and community service events.
