As Crain's New York Business announced, paper conglomerate Dennis Mehiel and his wife, Karen Mehiel, chief executive of corrugated box company Kampack, have sold their massive duplex in Mrs. Armory S. Carhart Mansion, a landmarked Upper East Side building, for $19,987,500. The apartment has been on and off the market since 2016, when it was asking $30,000,000, and entered contract in October 2022 with a $23,900,000 ask. The closing price shows a notable reduction, but was nevertheless high enough for the Mehiels to turn a profit (having paid $16,000,000 for it) and for it to be the highest-priced sale of the past week.
The Mehiels' duplex was in a prewar Carnegie Hill building, but the second-highest sale took place in a Billionaires' Row supertall. Residence #95W, a three-bedroom on a high floor in Central Park Tower, closed for $16,336,250. While this does not put it too far behind the top sale, it does come in 15.4% below the last asking price of $19,301,000. It was not the only reduced Billionaires' Row condo of the past week; down the street at One57, a three-bedroom condo sold for $13,400,000 in the fifth-highest overall sale, but 13.5% below the last asking price.
The week's top downtown sale was a floor-through home in The Tulip Building, home of a penthouse that set new real estate records for Soho. Residence #3's closing price of $14,250,000 was not quite so high as the penthouse's, but was nevertheless good enough for the fourth-highest overall sale of the past week. The buyer conducted the transaction through an LLC and thus could not be identified, but the building's past residents have included Academy Award-winning actor Heath Ledger and financier David Matlin.
