The word cabana is taken from the Spanish word for “cabin” (cabaña) and conjures the image of a lavish beach or waterfront resort. Indeed, many outdoor pools in New York residential buildings are surrounded by cabanas, but this structure has increasingly become a fixture on roof decks without any water features.
In any setting, cabanas represent the modern evolution of the small huts that were built as changing rooms around early outdoor pools. Eventually, one or all sides were opened to let in fresh air while still offering protection from the sun and the elements. The Spruce notes that the term is often applied to pergolas, pavilions, and canopied daybeds because of its luxury connotations.

Depending on the size of the cabana, they can be used to house everything from a single lounge chair to a sofa to a full outdoor kitchen. Most commonly in city residences, though, they provide shelter to lounge chairs or couches, offering an outdoor space for reading or relaxation with an emphasis on comfort.

Some buildings have furnished their roof decks with cabanas the same way they provide lounge chairs and dining tables, which can lead to a "first come, first serve" environment on nice days. Other buildings have gone one step further, offering dedicated cabanas for purchase or lease or including them with the purchase of an apartment. Even with an extra fee, this option allows residents of lower floors to have a small slice of private rooftop space for less than a high-floor home with a private roof deck might typically cost.
