In New York City buildings, the penthouse is commonly understood to be the apartment on the top floor of the building, featuring the most expansive floor plate, the most impressive views, the highest ceilings, the most sumptuous finishes, the greatest likelihood of private outdoor space, and, correspondingly, the highest price and greatest cachet in the building.
