The history of Tribeca can practically be traced through the American Thread Building at 260 West Broadway: In 1896, the Renaissance Revival building by William Tubby went up as the Wool Exchange Building at a time when New York hoped to overtake Boston as the center of the nation’s wool trade. When this venture did not succeed, American Thread Company acquired the building in 1907 and gave it the name it keeps to this day.

Decades later, as artists recognized the appeal of downtown lofts, Keith Haring painted a mural in the building as part of a student exhibition; it was discovered in 2007. In 1980, it was one of Tribeca's first industrial loft buildings to be converted to luxury condos. Today, the American Thread Building is a New York City landmark, on the National Register of Historic Places, and one of the most well-established buildings in the neighborhood.
Some would happily live in a storage room in this historic building, but an unparalleled listing has just come on the market: At #2DEF-3E, three apartments and a recording studio used by Earth Wind & Fire were masterfully combined into a stunning five-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath duplex loft with arched windows and ceilings over 12 feet high. It is listed for $7.898 million, a price that CityRealty data reports is nearly twice the average of similarly-sized Tribeca apartments. However, no other listing can claim its illustrious history, rich architectural details, grand scale, and modern amenities all in one home.
