A Glimpse at NYC's First Hyatt House, Now Open

The 30-floor Hyatt House New York/Chelsea at 815 Sixth Avenue recently wrapped up construction and officially opened April 27th. The site, also known as 101 West 28th Street, was originally in the hands of real estate company Adellco, which proposed a 29-story glassy residential tower back in 2005. The project was eventually canceled and NYC-based developers Lexin Capital, spearheaded by Metin Negrin, picked up the foreclosed property in 2011. It is NYC's first Hyatt House, a flagship of the Hyatt brand.

Designed by Nobutaka Ashihara, the 150-room hotel lies on the edge of Chelsea, in the area known as the Flower District. The hotel enjoys a corner design advantage, allowing guests visibility of up and down Sixth Avenue - including views of One World Trade and the Empire State Building.

The Hyatt House New York/Chelsea ditches the traditional hotel look and aims for a more residential design in its facade and interior layouts. It utilizes floor-to-ceiling blue glass panels - commonly seen in residential projects - and its studio and one-bedroom units have functional, apartment-style layouts ranging from 270 to 510 square feet. The hotel was also designed to accommodate families and large groups as evidenced by the 60 interconnecting rooms.

Standing alongside all the flower shops on 28th street, the hotel brings a quaint neighborhood vibe to the busy Manhattan area and provides a colorful and welcoming experience for guests. The vibe continues in the units which come equipped with home furnishings like plush couches, large flat panel TVs, dedicated work spaces, USB outlets, microwaves, and refrigerators. 74 rooms feature kitchenettes with stainless steel appliances - convenient for extended-stay guests - and 18 one-bedroom suites include in-room washer/dryer units and pull-out sofa beds. Residents will enjoy the floor-to-ceiling windows which provide those classic Manhattan views.

Other notable hotel features include a ground floor 2Beans shop, a 24-hour fresh food market and a 24-hour H bar which will provide breakfast in the morning and cocktails with tapas in the evening. As part of the Very Important Resident (VIR) program, the hotel will also provide a complimentary grocery shopping service.

Amenities include a business center, communal laundry facility, and a 11th floor terrace with unobstructed city views. The site's most exciting amenity is perhaps the 24-hour fitness center located on the top floor, making it Manhattan's first hotel rooftop gym. As an added bonus, it includes an outdoor recreational area for classes so guests can enjoy a workout while taking in the NYC skyline.
