Rendering of 11 Greene Street, which received approvals from the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Construction has finally begun on a 7-story mixed-use residential building at 11 Greene Street in Soho. The path toward groundbreaking, however, has not been an easy one. Architect Gene Kaufman had originally drawn up plans for the site back in 2001 but faced a design rejection (the original design was called ugly and flat by critics), and the market downturn.
Caisson drilling and excavation work has started at the site.
Kaufman's earlier design for the projected that was rejected by the Landmarks Commission.
Now, his new plans depict a building with a detailed façade that tells a complex story. The façade facing Canal Street will feature corbelled detailing and large windows, joined at the corner by the Greene Street façade with its trabeated metal system and intricate structural configuration of space. As the materiality shifts from Greene to Canal, according to Gene Kaufman, the end-product will “reflect the fact that while Soho’s uniqueness as a historic district derives from its many cast iron buildings, the area also has a rich collection of masonry structures.”
Lobby and bathroom rendering (Escobar Design)
The building's interior designer hasn't been announced, but a pair of renderings from Escobar Design may be a hint. The firm's website has renderings for a lobby and bathroom under the address of 11 Greene Street, so perhaps we'll see more renderings from them soon.

The 65,924-square-foot building is in development by Thor Equities and will hold 36 spacious loft-style residences. It will also have over 11 thousand square feet of retail space at its base, with 240 feet of frontage on Greene and Canal Streets.
