Description of 985 Fifth Avenue

Ex-Governor Eliot Spitzer's family firm is building a new 19-story high-end condominium building at 985 Fifth Avenue in New York, in place of its existing 53-year-old rental building across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The new building will be the same height as its predecessor but have fewer apartments, with just 26 condominium units as opposed to 47 rentals. The new structure will likely target the highest end of the market considering it is the only ground-up development on this section of Fifth Avenue. Demolition of the existing structure will not commence until 2024. Studio Sofield with SLCE Architects designed the new, traditionally styled building, which requires design approval by NYC's Landmarks Preservation Commission.
