This Week in NYC Living

JULY 1, 2014

Find ways to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks on the Brooklyn Bridge and celebration in the streets in NYC neighborhoods near and far.

Warm up to the weekend on Thursday, July 3rd with dreamy female electro trio Au Revoir Simone in the Sculpture Garden for MoMA Nights at the MoMA in Midtown West from 5:30 to 8 PM.

The 38th annual patriotic pyrotechnic-palooza known as the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks returns to the East River after five years on the Hudson with music, lights and plenty of action on the Brooklyn Bridge including headlining pop acts and much more. The show starts at 8 and parts of the bridge will be closed to traffic. The best spots for viewing the display include the FDR Drive, South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn Bridge Promenade and any number of waterside streets in Brooklyn Heights. If you’re lucky enough to score an invite to a private rooftop soiree you’ll have great seats without having to fight the crowds. The big boom starts at 8 PM; wherever you’re headed, plan ahead and arrive early to make sure you secure a spot.

Popular fireworks cruises like the Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular and Front Row Fireworks by NY Waterway are yet another take on the front row viewing experience.

The South Street Seaport is throwing a Pier Party at Fulton Street and South Street from July 1-5 that promises to be packed with family entertainment, live music and an unobstructed view of the fireworks on the Fourth. See the event site for more information.

Another July 4th tradition, Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest consumes Coney Island once again, with competitive consumption taken to epic heights in a dog-eat-dog showdown at 2PM.

Head to the Park Slope side of Gowanus for a celebration with a retro theme: The Rockabilly Night Market starts at 5PM on Friday, July 4, and will offer live bands, vintage and craft goods, a pin-up photo booth, a vintage car show, a food fair and more in a celebration of 1950s patriotic America.

For the more athletically-inclined, the NYCRuns Firecracker 5K is a great chance to get a workout in and celebrate the 4th at the same time. The race happens on Governor’s Island on July 4 at 9AM, kicks off with a ferry ride and ends with a post-race party. See the event site for more details.
