Ariel West is a 31 story condominium completed in 2007 as one of two glass towers facing each other across Broadway at West 99th and 100th streets. Extell Development Company developed the 73 residence building, with COOKFOX responsible for its setback slab design. The height of Ariel West and its sister tower altered the northern Upper West Side skyline and helped prompt a 51 block rezoning that capped new construction on Broadway at 145 feet and restricted transfers of air rights from side streets.
The building was planned largely around family sized residences, many with three or more bedrooms. Ten foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, central air, in-unit laundry, broad great rooms, and layouts separating living areas from bedroom wings recur in the larger homes; upper floors add Hudson River and skyline exposures. At the top, a roughly 5,000 square foot penthouse is organized around a curved living and dining space nearly 50 feet long, with panoramic views and two terraces, including a covered south facing terrace with skylights.
Ariel West has a 24 hour doorman and concierge, an attended lobby, a full service garage, and a live-in resident manager. Its 51 foot indoor pool anchors a 7,000 square foot fitness facility with a gym, yoga and Pilates studio, locker rooms, and steam rooms. A landscaped courtyard contains a playground and basketball court, while indoor play areas, a planted terrace, bicycle storage, and private storage add to the building program. Shared facilities at Ariel East include a party room, screening room, and catering kitchen.
In 2011, owners voted 47 to 3 to adopt a buildingwide smoking ban covering the apartments as well as common areas, making Ariel West one of the earlier New York condominiums to enact such a policy. Television personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck has been a resident. Riverside Park lies to the west, while Central Park, Broadway shopping, and the neighborhood’s cultural institutions are also nearby.
