49 Chambers Street, originally built in 1912 as the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank, is a 15-story Beaux-Arts landmark designed by Raymond F. Almirall. The U-shaped building features a rusticated limestone base with banded columns and was one of the first skyscrapers to employ an "H" layout to maximize light and air. Its grand banking hall, featuring an elliptical stained glass ceiling and ornate architectural details, has been preserved and converted for retail use.
In 2018, the Chetrit Group transformed the building into 99 luxury condominiums, with Woods Bagot serving as the conversion architect and Gabellini Sheppard Associates handling interior design. The residential entrance is marked by a curved bronze marquee beneath banded columns, while the building's elaborate roofline and bay windows maintain its historic character.
Residences feature hickory hardwood floors in chevron patterns, custom ceruse Cypress wood cabinetry by Minimal Cucine, and honed San Marino marble finishes. Bathrooms showcase Apaiser stone fixtures, radiant heated floors, and premium materials like honed white marble and Casona Pietra Forte Fiorentina sandstone.
The building's location across from City Hall Park offers residents protected views of architectural landmarks including the Woolworth Building, Freedom Tower, and Brooklyn Bridge. Its position provides easy access to public transportation and the vibrant neighborhoods of Tribeca and Lower Manhattan.
Residents enjoy over 20,000 square feet of amenities including a landscaped roof deck with outdoor kitchen and dining areas, a 50-foot lap pool, hammam and spa, sauna and steam rooms, state-of-the-art fitness center, virtual golf simulator, screening room, resident lounge, children's playroom, and tween lounge.
The building's original banking hall features impressive architectural details including a grand elliptical stained glass ceiling in its vestibule, decorative putti, and a clock. This space has been preserved and repurposed, maintaining a connection to the building's historic past while serving modern needs.
