Description

In addition to being one of the world's most acclaimed actors, Robert De Niro is TriBeCa's most famous resident as the host of a film festival, a principle in famous restaurants in the neighborhood - TriBeCa Grill and Nobu, founded in 1990 and 1995, respectively - and a real estate developer.

For a while, he operated the Hudson Lounge at this location but in 2004 closed it to make way for a new condominium apartment project known as 116 Hudson. The development includes both a mixed-use structure at that address that dates to 1887 and a new, 7-story structure that was constructed on an adjacent vacant lot.

Mr. De Niro developed the project with AFC Realty Capital, of which Arthur Fefferman is president.

BKSK Architects designed the project, preserving the red-brick façade of the smaller building and creating a very handsome, modern, all-glass façade for the taller structure. The combined buildings contain only five residential units, each about 2,000 square feet, a duplex penthouse of about 3,000 square feet and 4,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. The new building has integrated metal sunshades outside of the floor-to-ceiling windows. The lobby has a curved wall and Jerusalem stone floors. The building features a Siedle video security system, proximity-ready and key fob, a private keyed elevator, individual private storage rooms, a part-time building superintendent, a dual-zoned central air-conditioning system, woodburning fireplaces, Bosch dishwashers and Sub-Zero refrigerators.

Stephen F. Byrns, Harry C. Kendall, George B. M. Schieferdecker and Joan Krevlin are the principles of BKSK Architects, which also designed the very handsome Hubert condominium apartment project in TriBeCA.

Mr. De Niro founded TriBeCa Productions in 1988 with Jane Rosenthal and in 2002 they founded The TriBeCa Film Institute that hosts the annual TriBeCa Film Festival with sponsor American Express.
