555 West 23rd Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

Construction on this 14-story, 337-unit apartment building at 555 West 23rd Street began in 2004.

The attractive, red-brick building originally was conceived as a rental development, but changed to a condominium.

Douglaston Development, a Levine Buildings company, is the developer.

It has been designed by Stephen B. Jacobs Group and interior design Andi Pepper, who collaborated also on the Ganesvoort Hotel in the meat-packing district to the south.

It is the second major building on the block just to the west of the High Line elevated rail road tracks that will be converted into a park to be erected as a rental and then changed to a condominium. The other is the Marais on the north side of the street.

Another large and impressive building, the Tate, a rental, is just to the east of 555 West 23rd Street.

Two other small lots on the same side of the street were developed as condominium projects, the High Line 519 at 519 West 23rd Street, designed by Lindy Roy, and HL 23 at 511 West 23rd Street, designed by Neil Denari.

These buildings are at the epicenter of Chelsea s art gallery district.

555 West 23rd Street goes through the block to 550 West 24th Street where the building is only 13-stories high.

It has a doorman, a concierge, valet services, a fitness room, bicycle storage, on-site valet parking, some terraces, and a landscaped outdoor courtyard.

The building's lobby is decorated with a large "license plate" sign with the building's address.

The building has a three-story atrium, a fitness center, and a skylit lounge with a fireplace and its courtyard garden has fountains.

Apartments have GE stainless steel refrigerators, ranges and dishwashers with a Grigio Sardo granite kitchen countertop with a glass mosaic backsplash and cayenne maple kitchen cabinetry. Baths have expresso wood vanities with Juparuna Vyara granite tops and Amarillo stone shower enclosures.
